Taemong (태몽): the dreams that announce a baby in Korea
In Korea, hardly anyone arrives in the world without a story told beforehand. The taemong (태몽) is the dream that, according to tradition, announces a baby's arrival and leaves a hint about their character. It is not always the mother-to-be who has it: it might be the father, a grandmother, an aunt or even a close friend. Many families treasure it and tell it to the child once they grow up: "Before you were born, your grandma dreamed of a huge tiger." In K-dramas it often shows up as a sweet or funny scene. The classic symbols come from nature: powerful animals, ripe fruit, the sun, the moon, shining jewels. What follows is folklore, not science or a medical prediction: a lovely tradition to learn about and share.
Dragon 용꿈 태몽
This is the most prestigious taemong of all. A dragon rising into the sky or coiling around the dreamer's arms is linked to someone destined to stand out, with big ambitions and a gift for leading. Families tell this one at every gathering, with pride they make no effort to hide.
Tiger 호랑이 태몽
The tiger stands for courage, strength and a character nobody overlooks. If the tiger walks calmly into the house or approaches without fuss, it is read as a son or daughter with natural authority, able to protect their own people and carve out a path of their own.
Snake 뱀 태몽
Far from scary, the snake is a much-loved taemong. It is linked to intelligence, sensitivity and material good fortune. A white or golden snake that comes close without aggression is read as a bright, intuitive child with the luck to thrive in life.
Pig 돼지 태몽
In Korean culture the pig is pure abundance. As a taemong, it announces someone who will bring prosperity to the family and will never go without food on the table. If there are several piglets together, tradition speaks of a house full of joy.
Carp 잉어 태몽
A big, shining carp, especially one caught with bare hands, is a classic taemong. It recalls the legend of the carp that swims up the waterfall and turns into a dragon: someone persistent, who grows slowly but climbs very high.
Sun 해 태몽
Dreaming that the sun enters your chest or falls into your arms is one of the brightest taemong there is. It is said to announce a person with presence, generosity and the power to light up others. In old stories, this is how kings and heroes were announced.
Moon 달 태몽
A full moon is a soft, elegant taemong. Folk tradition tied it to a girl of quiet beauty, though today it is read more as a calm, artistic and kind character. A round, clear moon is considered better than a pale or clouded one.
Peach 복숭아 태몽
In East Asia the peach is the fruit of long life. Receiving big, ripe, fragrant peaches in a dream is read as a healthy, sweet child loved by everyone. If the dreamer eats the peach with relish, tradition considers it even more favorable.
Chestnuts 밤 태몽
Gathering shiny chestnuts, especially straight out of their spiky husks, is a very Korean taemong. Folklore tied it to a baby boy, but its loveliest meaning is another: someone with a firm outer shell and a warm, nourishing heart inside.
Red chili pepper 고추 태몽
This taemong gets a laugh in any Korean family. A long, glossy red chili was, by tradition, a sign of a baby boy, thanks to a popular play on words. Beyond the joke, it speaks of energy, mischief and a temperament full of spark.
Jewels and rings 보석 태몽
Finding a jewel, being handed a gold ring or seeing precious stones sparkle in your hand is read as a precious, refined child with a special talent. A diamond or a large pearl is considered the sign of someone who will be greatly admired.
Flowers 꽃 태몽
A field of open flowers, or a bouquet someone hands you with affection, is a delicate taemong. It is linked to a person with an artistic spirit, kind and very sociable. Fresh flowers in vivid colors are the most celebrated in the traditional reading.
