Plot (no spoilers)
Han Jung-suh and Cha Song-joo grow up together, almost inseparable, and what starts as a childhood friendship slowly turns into first love. She is sweet and patient; he looks after her with a loyalty that seems endless. Everything changes when Jung-suh's father remarries. The new wife brings two children with her: Han Yoo-ri, a jealous stepsister who wants everything Jung-suh has, Song-joo included, and Han Tae-hwa, a stepbrother who at first just watches from the sidelines. At home, the stepmother and Yoo-ri make Jung-suh's life miserable, while Tae-hwa begins to feel something for her that he can't put a name to.
Song-joo leaves to study in the United States, and the distance leaves Jung-suh without her main refuge. When he finally comes back years later, her life has already been turned upside down by an accident and a chain of lies. From there, the series follows these four characters as love, jealousy and deception pull them together and push them apart again and again. The question behind every episode is simple and cruel: can a first love survive so many people set on breaking it?
Characters and their Saju
Han Jung-suh 한정서
Choi Ji-woo · Yin Fire · The Candle
At the start, Jung-suh is a gentle young woman who has grown up at Song-joo's side. The arrival of her stepmother and Yoo-ri turns her home into a hostile place, and she answers with patience instead of anger. Her tenderness is her strength, even if it sometimes looks like her weakness.
If Jung-suh had a Saju card, it would be Yin Fire · The Candle: a small flame that makes no noise but stays lit even when the wind blows hard around it. Her warmth doesn't push itself on anyone; it's offered, and whoever comes close can feel it.
Cha Song-joo 차송주
Kwon Sang-woo · Yang Wood · The Great Tree
Song-joo is the childhood friend who is always there for Jung-suh. His love for her is direct and has no hidden sides. Early in the story he leaves for the United States, and when he returns years later he finds a changed world, though his devotion to her is still standing.
If Song-joo had a Saju card, it would be Yang Wood · The Great Tree: deep roots, a straight trunk and branches that give shade to the people he loves. He can travel very far, but a tree like that never forgets where it took root.
Han Tae-hwa 한태화
Shin Hyun-joon · Yin Water · The Rain
Tae-hwa enters Jung-suh's life as her new stepbrother. At first he keeps his distance, watching how his mother and sister treat her. Over time, what he feels for her grows more intense and more complicated, and that inner tension defines him.
If Tae-hwa had a Saju card, it would be Yin Water · The Rain: quiet, persistent, the kind that seeps in slowly. He doesn't shout what he feels; he lets it fall drop by drop, until one day the ground is no longer the same.
Han Yoo-ri 한유리
Kim Tae-hee · Yang Fire · The Sun
Yoo-ri is the stepsister who looks at Jung-suh with envy from day one. She wants her place, her attention and, above all, Song-joo. Her jealousy pushes her to act against Jung-suh again and again, and it is one of the sparks that light up the conflict.
If Yoo-ri had a Saju card, it would be Yang Fire · The Sun, but a sun that needs to be the only one in the sky. She shines hard and wants everything to revolve around her; when another light appears, she feels it as a threat.
