Dreaming of pigs: meaning in Korea
It is the most famous money dream in Korea. A pig, the bigger and fatter the better, announces prosperity, income and lottery luck.
What they say in Korea 돼지꿈
If there is one dream every Korean hopes to have, it is the dwaejikkum (돼지꿈). The pig is a symbol of wealth and abundance, partly because the word dwaeji sounds a little like don, which means money, and partly because a fat pig was the sign of a prosperous household. In Korea, dreaming of a pig, especially if it comes into your house, if you hug it or if it is huge, is believed to announce gains. It is so well known that many people buy a lottery ticket the next morning, and shops sell piggy ornaments and piggy banks. There is even a custom of "buying" the dream from whoever had it, paying a few coins to take their luck.
Depending on the details
if the pig comes into your house
This is the most classic and celebrated version. Luck walks straight into your home: an unexpected income, a raise or a deal that closes well.
if the pig runs away
A pig bolting off is read as money that could leave quickly. A good time to check small expenses and not lend too easily.
if you see lots of piglets
A litter of piglets is read as gains arriving from several sources, or as a family growing in happiness. It is also a much-loved taemong.
if a pig bites or chases you
Scary as it is, in Korea it is read as luck so persistent it will not let you escape. According to the folk reading, fortune is literally chasing you.
And luck?
The classic Korean move: buy a lottery ticket for fun and keep the dream to yourself until after the draw, so you do not give the luck away.
In other traditions
In the West the pig is usually linked to excess, greed or mess, and sometimes to someone acting selfishly. Some readings connect it to abundance, but rarely with the excitement it causes in Korea.
