Plot (no spoilers)

Yoon Se-ri is a successful South Korean businesswoman, an heiress and the head of a fashion brand. One day she goes paragliding, a sudden storm sweeps her away and, without understanding how, she crosses the border and lands in North Korea. Right in front of her is Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok, a serious but kind soldier who once trained as a pianist abroad. Instead of turning her in, he decides to hide her.

While he and his loyal soldiers look for a safe way to send her back to the South, Se-ri gets a crash course in life in a North Korean village, where everything is new to her and nothing works the way it does in her world of luxury. The culture clash brings plenty of laughs, but also tender moments.

What starts as a problem nobody could explain turns into something more. The feelings growing between Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok get complicated on every side: the border that separates them, his fiancée, the elegant cellist Seo Dan, and dangerous enemies on both sides. Add to that Gu Seung-jun, a smooth-talking con man and Se-ri's former fiancé, who is also hiding in the North.

Characters and their Saju

戊

Ri Jeong-hyeok 리정혁

Hyun Bin · Yang Earth · The Mountain

Jeong-hyeok is a North Korean army captain of few words and a serious face, but kind underneath. Before putting on the uniform he studied piano abroad, a detail that reveals his sensitive side. When Se-ri literally falls into his path, he chooses to protect her even though it complicates his life.

If Jeong-hyeok had a Saju card, it would be Yang Earth · The Mountain: serious on the outside, firm in his promises, with hidden valleys where a piano plays. Anyone seeking shelter in his shadow finds it, even if he never says so out loud.

丙

Yoon Se-ri 윤세리

Son Ye-jin · Yang Fire · The Sun

Se-ri is a South Korean heiress and the CEO of a fashion company, used to giving orders and keeping everything under control. A paragliding accident leaves her in North Korea, far from everything she knows. At first, her pride is her shield and her sense of humor is her lifeline.

If Se-ri had a Saju card, it would be Yang Fire · The Sun: she shines anywhere, even where nobody knows who she is. Her pride can burn, but she also warms whoever comes close, and her light doesn't know how to stay hidden.

壬

Gu Seung-jun 구승준

Kim Jung-hyun · Yang Water · The Ocean

Seung-jun is a smooth-talking con man and Se-ri's former fiancé. At the start of the story he is hiding in North Korea, far from the trouble he left behind. Charming and hard to trust, he always seems to have a plan to get out of a jam, even if it isn't always an honest one.

If Seung-jun had a Saju card, it would be Yang Water · The Ocean: he takes any shape, finds a way out through any crack and never shows the bottom. High tide today, low tide tomorrow; nobody knows where the current will carry him.

辛

Seo Dan 서단

Seo Ji-hye · Yin Metal · The Jewel

Seo Dan is an elegant cellist and the fiancée Jeong-hyeok's family chose for him. She is proud, strong-willed and not about to give up her place easily. The arrival of a stranger from the South in her fiancé's life throws her completely off balance.

If Seo Dan had a Saju card, it would be Yin Metal · The Jewel: refined, demanding of herself and with a shine her pride won't let fade. Like a tightly tuned cello string, she sounds beautiful, but she doesn't bend.

Why so many people fell for it

Crash Landing on You brought together comedy, impossible romance and a border that seems impossible to cross. The chemistry between Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin was talked about so much that in 2022 they announced their engagement in real life. In Latin America it arrived on Netflix under its Spanish title, and in Brazil as "Pousando no Amor". Smuggled copies even circulated in North Korea, where 2021-22 surveys named it the most popular K-drama.
